One of the first things I did when I moved into this house last winter was set up a hummingbird feeder on the veranda. Since the feisty little critters weren’t used to an endless supply of easy food, there were quite a few fights and I had to add a second feeder fairly quickly.

That paid off, though, because this spring I’ve had more hummingbirds visit than anywhere else I’ve lived, and it’s especially exciting because for the first time I have Rufous hummingbirds in addition to the Anna’s hummingbirds which are so common here in Washington.

Today at lunch I spent some relaxing time just sitting on the porch watching the hummingbirds visit the feeders.

Pretty sure this is a female Anna’s hummingbird, but could be a juvenile

And then, as I was getting ready to go inside and go back to work, I noticed that some of the local deer were passing through, and had my first look at the new babies that were born this spring. They’re adorable, even if they are furry little garden menaces.

This little one enjoyed climbing all over my rock wall and checking out the lavender in my Herb Garden.

Happy to see this little one learned his lesson: lavender and herbs are not for deer to snack on!
