It’s been a crazy few weeks finalizing the purchase of my new house, and preparing to move. But thanks to a lot of work and planning, Finn and I are officially “living” in the new house now, even if we’re living with the bare minimum necessities.

The most stressful and chaotic part of it all was dealing with getting the interior painted before I moved in. Luckily I was able to find a very good local painter who had a week available, and while that week wasn’t without drama, it was well worth the hassle of getting it all done.

As before, I used Benjamin Moore Regal Select paint for all the interiors, and I kept things simple by choosing the same colors for the new house that I used in the townhouse. Why mess with a good thing?

All of the walls are a nice light neutral gray-toned pinkish lavender, but of course I had to do some purple accent walls.

There is a dark purple wall in the dining room that continues on into the kitchen:

And another dark purple wall in the bedroom:

I love how the dark walls turned out, but I heard later that the painter had some serious concerns when he opened that paint can the first time. (Concerns about the color or my sanity? Unclear. 😀 ) I probably should have warned him it was very, very dark.

For extra fun, I did a second accent color in the small foyer and the “bonus room” that I will be using to expand the foyer and set up proper storage for outdoor gear, bags, and cameras. The challenge with this was finding the right lines for the transition from accent to regular wall color, and I definitely like how it turned out:

Once the painting was done, I loaded up some essentials in my Jeep and hauled a few loads to the new house so Finn and I can sleep, eat, and work there.

I’m probably exceeding the weight limit of the folding table, but my temporary desk setup in the new office is quite functional:

I also had to take care of a couple small fixes around the house, most important was figuring out how to reset and un-jam the garbage disposal. A little bit of research, a wait for the proper tool to arrive, and 5 minutes of work saved a hefty plumbing and appliance repair bill!

The very unglamorous side of moving: fixing stuff

Of course, in between all the hauling stuff and fixing things, most important was making sure that Finn feels comfortable in the new house. Right now we’re camped out in what will be my office, so that he can adjust to one room without getting overwhelmed by an entire house.

His favorite cat tower was a priority in the first day of moving, and by the second morning he was appreciating the view from the new windows:

By the third day, he was relaxed and happy and napping hard:

Speaking of relaxing, one of the best features of the new house is the big covered porch off the main living area. Or as I call it, The Veranda, because it is way too fancy to just be a “porch.” A good deck chair was one of my first acquisitions for the new house, and Sunday mornings are now dedicated to sitting on the veranda with a cup of tea and enjoying a quiet morning (along with any other time I can sneak out there for a few minutes!)
