I love it when a dreaded project is easier than expected! I’ve had my new Ring floodlight camera in the house for two months, dreading the complex project involving an instruction manual, wiring, mounting plate, and ladder. Especially the ladder, because I do not do well on ladders. In fact, I dreaded it so much that this was on a list to have my Very Expensive Contractor do the installation for me, but his visit is delayed and I was tired of dealing with my old camera and it’s issues.

So I decided that this would be my one and only goal for the weekend, and I would take it in small steps. Today’s step was simple: get the boxes out of the garage and read the instructions.

Trixie offered to “help” read the instructions

Boxes opened, instruction manuals located, and as I read through them….I had to laugh. The entire installation consisted of connecting three wires, mounting a bracket with two screws, and fastening the camera to the bracket with a twist lock. That’s it!

So I signed off work for lunch, tossed the box to the girls to play with, and connected the three wires that give the camera power from the adaptor bracket.

The girls enjoyed a fun new box

Then I got my little stepladder out, and my trusty new little drill, and turned off the old camera. A few careful trips up and down the ladder, and I had the old camera out and the new camera up. I also took a minute to be grateful to past me for getting rid of my huge, overpowered, scary cordless drill and replacing it with a compact, lightweight version that is much easier for me to use. So many projects got delayed or skipped because I was too uncomfortable using the previous drill. Now I happily grab the little drill for any project that needs it because it’s the right tool for me!

The hardest part of the whole project was installing cable management hooks for the camera power cord, which routes into the garage to an outlet at the back. And now, I have a functional floodlight camera over the driveway, which should work much better than the last one!

(Yes, I realize the camera is off-center from the garage door. That’s because the lights the previous owners installed were off center.)
