(Warning: pet loss)
Last week, Trixie had her planned vet appointment and was diagnosed with a double ear infection and scheduled for more tests. Wednesday she went in for a full lab panel and ultrasound, she wasn’t feeling good but nothing unusual showed on the tests.
Friday morning she seemed a little better, although still having trouble eating and in some pain. Around lunchtime she started having litter box troubles so we went to the urgent care vet where she was diagnosed with a UTI and given antibiotics.
The antibiotics helped with the UTI, but by Sunday it was obvious she was still in pain and not feeling well. Watching her try to eat just broke my heart because she was obviously hungry but chewing her food hurt, she was in a lot of pain and not feeling well due to being malnourished. We got through Christmas Day on Monday, and on Tuesday morning I called the at-home veterinary service, who had a time available that afternoon.
I got up early to spend some extra time with her. She got to eat as much kibble as she wanted, made biscuits on her favorite fuzzy blanket in my office, and burrowed in to snuggle with me for a short nap. After I got back from getting groceries she was pretty uncomfortable but she slept in her favorite cat bed next to my recliner while Pixie and Finn sat on my lap and kept vigil with me. Then she had some more kibble, and finally some potato chips which she’s been trying to steak for so long. Then she burrowed under the blanket and slept in my lap in the recliner until it was time to go upstairs to the den before the vet arrived. I took her favorite fuzzy blanket up there, and sent it with her. Her ashes will be returned in a few weeks, and I’ll set them on the bookcase along with her paw print and Max’s memorial.
It was a long, hard five years trying to identify the cause of her pain and other health issues, and despite seeing multiple vets and specialists no one was ever able to provide an answer. In the end, I had to do the only thing I could to ease her pain, even though it is terrible for me.
RIP my fluffy girl, and may you explore all the gardens you want now that you are finally free of pain. Pixie and I miss you very much.
